(Just The News)—Several contests for the U.S. House in California could determine the partisan control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.

In November 2025, California voters approved Proposition 50, a measure to redraw congressional districts in California to net as many as four additional seats for Democrats in the state. Many of these races in these states are among the most hotly contested in the nation.

The Center Square spoke to candidates and party organizers in these critical districts.

District 22

U.S. Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford, is seeking reelection against Democratic candidate Randy Villegas. The Central Valley has seen tight competition between the two candidates after Villegas defeated Democratic challenger Jasmeet Baines.

Villegas called for a progressive income tax structure that “ensures millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.” He also said working class families should get relief from rising gas prices and said he would support a federal gas tax suspension.

“Right now our fuel prices, our prices at the pump are exploding,” Villegas told The Center Square. “We’ve got to use every single tool possible to provide immediate relief for our working families.”

In California, the average gas price on Thursday was $6.23 per gallon, according to AAA. California has consistently seen the highest prices in the country during recent years. Thursday’s national average was $4.33.

Villegas also slammed Valadao for his vote to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He called for reversal of the bill’s proposed tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires but said he supported policies like no tax on tips or overtime.

“My opponent’s vote on this bill to give tax breaks to the richest in our country is ridiculous,” Villegas told The Center Square. “We need a tax policy that is going to center our working families and that’s going to bring down costs for our working families, not billionaires.”

Valadao did not respond to The Center Square’s requests for an interview. However, Matthew Casarez, executive director of the Tulare County Republican Party, told The Center Square that Valadao’s record in Congress is resonating with voters. He pointed to the congressman’s vote for the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

“[Voters] see Congressman Valadao’s record on taxes. They know he is for affordability,” Casarez said.

Casarez acknowledged high gas prices across the country are related to the conflict with Iran. He said voters recognize those issues are temporary.

“The biggest jump in prices happened over the course of four years under Joe Biden,” Casarez told The Center Square. “They realize that a lot of this is temporary because of the situation in Iran.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, California’s 22nd Congressional District is home to a 27.6% foreign-born population, nearly double the overall U.S. foreign born population.

Immigration is a central issue between the two candidates in the Central Valley. Villegas slammed the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts and called for comprehensive reform across the country.

“Any ICE agent who has violated the constitution and communities should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Villegas said. “I want to fight to pass comprehensive humane immigration reform with a path to citizenship, so our neighbors no longer have to live in the shadows.”

Casarez said Valadao supports the Trump administration’s efforts to pursue criminals in the community. He pointed to a surge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the Central Valley over the previous week, which immigrant advocacy organizations have condemned.

“If you are a law abiding American citizen, you don’t have to worry about law enforcement,” Casarez said.

Valadao has more than $4.9 million in campaign contributions, compared to Villegas with $2.6 million, according to the Federal Election Commission. The incumbent Republican received $299,000 from Emmer Majority Builders, a group associated with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Delano, Minn. Valadao also received $44,000 from the Hispanic Leadership Trust Partnership and $67,000 from WinRed, an online fundraising platform for Republican candidates.

Villegas received more than $37,000 from the California House Majority Fund, $20,000 from the Blue Wave California Victory Fund and $5,000 from the Jane Fonda Climate PAC.

District 40

California’s 40th Congressional District has two incumbent Republicans at the top of the ticket. U.S. Reps. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, and Young Kim, R-Anaheim, are vying for reelection in the district, which was redrawn as part of Proposition 50.

Calvert did not respond to The Center Square’s requests for an interview. But he previously touted his record bringing funds for infrastructure projects to the district, dating back to his first election in 1992.

“Ken has successfully secured more than a billion dollars in federal funding for transportation, water, and clean air projects for Riverside County,” Calvert’s website reads.

Young Kim was not available for an interview in time for publication. She previously called for lowering gas prices and increasing the domestic energy supply.

“Working families are struggling to make ends meet, and I’m working to lower the cost of gas, groceries, and utilities and make it easier for families to get ahead,” Kim said on her campaign website.

During an earlier interview, Calvert said gas prices would go down once the tensions of the U.S. conflict in Iran settled. He said the conflict was “necessary” given intelligence information at the time.

“This action will end relatively soon,” Calvert said. “So I think you’re going to see declining price of oil and gasoline prices in the relatively near future.”

Calvert asserted he is a “consistent conservative” compared to Kim. Both Calvert and Ken consistently voted against resolutions to end Trump’s military authority in Iran and his tariff capabilities.

“You can’t just change your position from day to day,” Calvert said in an interview.

Jason Mills, a communications consultant with the Orange County Democratic Party, said the group is not organizing in the race between Calvert and Kim. Orange County, where Kim lives, is one of three major counties in the newly drawn 40th Congressional District. Calvert lives in Riverside County.

“Both Young Kim and Ken Calvert are MAGA Republicans,” Mills told The Center Square. “We are not mobilizing Democrats to vote for either of those candidates.”

Mills dismissed concerns about two Republican candidates on the ballot would prevent voters from turning out. He said rising gas prices, tariff policies and healthcare cuts are pushing voters to the polls.

“Democrats are motivated at the national level to vote against Donald Trump,” Mills said. “That is going to be what motivates voters in CA-40 rather than having any Democratic standard bearer in Congress.”

He said polling in state legislative races typically held by Republicans across Orange County is trending in favor of Democrats this year. Mills said having two Republicans at the top of the ticket in California’s 40th district will ensure that one loses reelection.

“Either way we see it as a victory because we’re losing one more Trump Republican out of Congress,” Mills said.

Kim has more than $8.8 million in campaign contributions, compared to Calvert with $6.1 million, according to the FEC. She received more than $858,000 from WinRed, $404,000 from Grow the Majority and $115,000 from GOP Winning Women 2026.

Calvert received $799,000 from the Calvert Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee to support the incumbent Congressman. He also received more than $138,000 from Grow the Majority and $32,000 from Flexpoint Media.

District 41

U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Whittier, and Santa Monica Republican Mitch Clemmons are duking it out in the race for California’s redrawn 41st Congressional District. Clemmons said he was motivated to run when he realized the new district included his hometown and his plumbing company.

“I have, I guess, a little bit of name recognition to a small extent in those cities, and I have grown up in those areas. And I want to see better things for the cities in my district,” Clemmons told The Center Square.

Clemmons called for reduced taxes and fewer business regulations. He said businesses in his district have been crippled by California tax policies and minimum wage requirements.

“It’s much harder to compete as a small business owner as opposed to a company like McDonald’s who can automate and absorb certain costs,” Clemmons said.

In Congress, he said he would support the Trump administration’s roll back of certain environmental policies to increase energy production and applauded the prescription drug deals through TrumpRx.

Clemmons said the administration’s tariff policies are essential to offsetting income taxes. He supported a long-term tariff plan to lower taxes and increase domestic production jobs.

“We could take these tariffs that we’re bringing in and utilize that in a way to not only have a balanced budget, but a budget where we’re saving money so we can start paying down our debt,” Clemmons told The Center Square.

Sanchez has called for ending the Trump administration’s tariff policies and keeping control of the mechanism with Congress. She introduced the Strengthening Social Security Act, legislation that would increase social security payroll taxes on high earners.

“She has been a great representative for her constituents, always standing up for working families and working class folks in her area,” Mills said. “Even though she has always had these small portions of Orange County, she can always be counted on to stand up for families.”

Sanchez has $1.6 million over Clemmons with $5,000, according to the FEC. She received $11,000 from Blue Wave California, $5,000 from the American Council of Life Insurers PAC and $10,000 from the American Crystal Sugar Company PAC.

Clemmons contributed $500 to his own campaign, according to the FEC. He also received $1,000 from Pat Dye, a retired resident of Mohave Valley, Ariz.

Starting the Day With a Scripture-Inspired Roast Helps Center Your Thoughts on Eternal Truths Amid Temporal Pressures

The world can seem chaotic, especially right after we wake up. Many believers start their mornings reaching for something familiar — a hot cup of coffee — yet end up settling for mediocre brews that do little more than deliver a caffeine jolt. The daily grind of life, with its endless distractions, news cycles, and responsibilities, can leave even the most faithful feeling spiritually parched alongside their physical fatigue. What if your morning ritual could do more than wake you up? What if it could ground you in truth, nourish your body with exceptional quality, and quietly advance a kingdom purpose at the same time?

That’s the promise — and the reality — behind Promised Grounds Coffee. This Christian-founded company doesn’t just roast beans; it approaches every step as an act of worship and discipleship. By selecting only the top 10% of specialty-grade beans, ethically sourced from dedicated farmers in Central and South America, and small-batch roasting them with reverence in Austin, Texas, Promised Grounds delivers what many describe as the best coffee available — never burnt, never bland, but rich with origin stories and layered flavors that honor God’s creation.

From the vibrant Psalm 27 Roast (a light, bright medium option) to the bold yet peaceful 2 Timothy 1:7 Decaf, each bag carries a Scripture verse that turns your daily pour into a gentle reminder of faith. And through their Ounce Per Ounce Promise, every ounce of coffee you enjoy provides an equal ounce of clean water to families in need via partnership with Filter of Hope — literally brewing hope for body and soul, one cup at a time.

The challenge for today’s Christians runs deeper than finding a decent cup. In an age of convenience-driven consumerism, it’s easy to support companies that dilute values or remain silent on matters of faith. Many believers want their everyday choices — from what they drink to how they spend — to reflect discipleship rather than just convenience. Promised Grounds solves this by weaving Christian excellence into the entire process: beans nurtured with prayerful stewardship by farming families, roasted as an offering rather than a commodity, and packaged with Bible verses to encourage a mindset of gratitude and purpose from the first sip. Reviewers consistently praise the smooth, rich profiles — whether enjoyed black in a drip maker, iced on a warm day, or shared in fellowship — noting how the quality stands toe-to-toe with premium secular brands while delivering something far more meaningful.

This integration of faith and flavor addresses a real need in Christian households and ministries. Busy parents, church leaders, and remote workers alike report that starting the day with a Scripture-inspired roast helps center their thoughts on eternal truths amid temporal pressures. The coffee’s exceptional character — bright citrus notes in lighter roasts or deep chocolate undertones in bolder ones — comes from meticulous selection and careful roasting that respects the bean’s natural gifts rather than masking them. It’s the kind of coffee that elevates a simple quiet time, fuels productive workdays, or sparks meaningful conversations when shared at Bible studies or outreach events. And because it’s ethically sourced with integrity, every purchase supports sustainable livelihoods for farmers who treat their crops like family harvests.

For those leading churches or small groups, the impact multiplies. Promised Grounds offers bundles and options perfect for hospitality ministries, turning ordinary coffee service into an opportunity to point people toward the living water of Christ. Imagine greeting visitors with a warm cup whose very bag carries God’s Word — a subtle yet powerful witness that aligns with the Great Commission. The company’s Texas roots and commitment to “brewing hope” resonate especially with believers who value American enterprise paired with global compassion.

Of course, quality alone isn’t enough if the experience feels out of reach. Promised Grounds keeps it accessible with practical perks like free shipping on orders over $40, sample sets for discovering favorites, and thoughtful add-ons such as faith-themed mugs. Whether you prefer whole beans for fresh grinding, grounds for convenience, or even bulk options for larger households and ministries, the result is consistently superior coffee that makes discipleship feel integrated rather than added on.

As you consider how to align even the smallest habits with your walk with God, Promised Grounds Coffee stands out as a refreshing solution. It tackles the dual problems of subpar daily sustenance and disconnected consumption by offering a product that genuinely excels in taste while advancing a mission of clean water, farmer dignity, and scriptural encouragement. Believers who make the switch often describe it as more than a beverage upgrade — it becomes part of their rhythm of gratitude, a daily invitation to remember that every good gift comes from above.

If you’re ready to transform your mornings (and perhaps your church gatherings) with coffee that honors both exceptional craftsmanship and Christian values, I encourage you to explore what Promised Grounds has to offer. One sip at a time, you’ll be nourishing your body, refreshing your spirit, and participating in something far greater — all while enjoying what truly is among the best coffee available.
