On Thursday, Democrat Majority Whip James Clyburn suggested that the 2022 midterm elections might not be legitimate if the Democrats’ “voting rights” bill isn’t passed, a talking point that also came from President Joe Biden on Wednesday.
Polls have shown Democrats are in serious trouble in 2022, with the possibility of a massive red wave.
Clyburn made his remarks during an interview on CNN. CNN’s Kasie Hunt asked Clyburn of Biden’s comments, “Do you agree with what he said in that press conference, are you concerned that without these voting rights bills the election results won’t be legitimate?”
Clyburn responded, “I’m absolutely concerned about that.”
“Let me remind the audience, that in 1965 at the time of the advent of the Voting Rights Act, only 3% of African Americans in Alabama were registered to vote,” Clyburn said. “We come in with the 1965 Voting Rights Act and look what we have now.”
On Wednesday, President Biden also questioned whether or not the 2022 election would be “legitimate” if the Democrats’ voting bills don’t pass.
Biden said, “Oh, yeah,” he replied. “I think it easily could be illegitimate.”“It all depends on whether or not we’re able to make the case to the American people that some of this is being set up to try to alter the outcome of the election,” he said referring to Republican efforts to preserve election integrity.
