Former President Donald Trump sent a video message to the family of Ashli Babbitt in honor of her birthday. Babbitt was shot by Capitol Police Officer Lt. Michael Byrd, who said he “saved countless lives” on during the Capitol riot on Jan. 6. Babbitt was unarmed.
Her shooting was deemed ” lawful ” by the Capitol Police and no charges were filed against Byrd in her death. Babbitt’s family demanded to know the identity of the officer, and though his name was initially withheld, it was released and Byrd was given a prime time interview on national television.
Trump spoke about Babbitt’s service in the US Navy, as well as her death, and called on the DOJ to reopen the investigation into her death. “We cherish the memory of Ashli Babbitt a truly incredible person,” Trump said. “To Ashli’s family and friends, please note that her memory will live on in our hearts for all time. Ashli served our country in the United States Air Force for 14 years, where she was a security forces airman and eventually went on to achieve the rank of senior airman. She defended our nation overseas and putting in Iraq to fight in the war on terror.
“But that horrible day of January 6, Ashli arrived at the United States Capitol, she was shot and tragically killed,” Trump continued. “Today would have been her birthday. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. We’re looking at you and you’re looking down on your family and on us, My heart and the hearts of millions of Americans across the country and with everyone, everyone who knew and loved her.
“I especially want to express my great sympathy to Ashli’s loving husband Aaron and her wonderful mother. I spoke to both of them, these are great people. Together we grieve her terrible loss. There was no reason Ashli should have lost her life that day,” he said.
“We must all demand justice for Ashli and her family. So on this solemn occasion, as we celebrate her life, we renew our call for a fair and nonpartisan investigation into the death of Ashli Babbitt. I […]
