A suspect in a brutal hate attack of an Asian woman in New York City has been identified as 38-year-old Brandon Elliot, who had served prison time after being convicted of murdering his mother.
Elliot is being charged with committing felony assault as a hate crime, attempted assault as a hate crime, assault, and attempted assault. He could face up to 25 years in prison if he is convicted. He was released from prison in 2019 and put on permanent parole.
Surveillance video shows the suspect attacking an Asian woman on Monday as she was walking to church outside of an apartment building. The suspect beat the woman until she was on the ground, repeatedly stomping her while shouting racial epithets before reportedly telling her “you don’t belong here,” and then fleeing the scene.
